“This thing is evil. This pearl is a sin. It will destroy us.” –Juana

This quote made us wonder on why Kino never actual lessened to Juana. I know Kino was attached to the pearl and in this society the males had the last say, but didn’t he think that she may be concerned about something? Didn’t it ever dawn on him that his wife maybe is saying something important? Even in society today males generally have the last say in home life. Males are also expected to provide to the family. If you look at normally who works and normally which parent doesn’t work most dads are stuck at the job all day. If a family wants to move again males decided if they should or not. Females do get some say on if they want to move, but if male has to move for his job the lady is expected to follow.

“But the pearls were accidents, and the finding of one was luck, a little pat on the back by God or the gods or both.”- Narrator

This quote tells us that fate and the gods are to decide whether we are lucky enough to find ourselves a fortune. This made us wonder if how hard you work in school actually matters if you will have a successful life. If the gods decide our fate, but at what point do they decided. If my future is already decided for me why work hard? Will I be able to change my fate and will I punished if I do so? We asked ourselves this as we read through this book. The only one that really decided what you do with your life is you. You make choices in life and those choices will help determine what you do.

“Our son must go to school. He must break out of the pot the holds us in.”- Kino

This quote is saying the Coyotito will one day to go school to help the two different racial classes come together as one. The pot represents the lower class being trapped in their own separate society, but are they really trapped in society or they just trapped in themselves? Do they need money and an education of can they interact with the white men in a different way? In middle school everyone has their own circle. Some circles are able to get along with other circles, but many just don’t interact with other people outside their circle. Just like the natives try not to interact with the white man and vice versa. Is their other ways though where two circles can get along in a happy state?
